ELENA LANGER was born in Moscow and is now based in London. After graduating from the Gnessin Music College where she majored in musicology and piano, she entered the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory to study composition with professor Yuri Vorontsov. In 1999 Elena moved to London to complete her degrees first at the Royal College of Music (MMus), and then at the Royal Academy of Music (PhD). Elena has studied with Julian Anderson, Simon Bainbridge, Gerard McBurney and taken lessons with Sofia Gubaidulina (Centre Acanthes, France), Dmitri Smirnov (UK), Jo Kondo (Dartington summer School, UK) and Jonathan Harvey (Centre Acanthes/IRCAM, France). In 2002 and 2003 Elena was a composer-in-residency with the Almeida Theatre, London.
Lena has written compositions in diverse genres, including opera and multimedia, orchestral, chamber and choral works and has received commissions and performances from international ensembles, festivals and organisations such as The Royal Opera House's ROH2, Zurich Opera (Switzerland), the Almeida Opera Festival (UK), Carnegie Hall, The Britten and Strauss Festival in Aldeburgh (UK), Gaudeamus New Music Week (Netherlands), Homecoming Chamber Music Festival (Russia), Moscow Autumn Festival (Russia), Warsaw Autumn Festival (Poland), Park Lane Group (UK), St. Petersburg's Music Spring (Russia), State of the Nation Festival (UK), Chamber Music Series "XX/XXI" of the Bayerische Staatsoper (Germany), Sounds Undeground (UK) and the Canterbury Festival (UK). Some of her works have been commercially recorded on the Black Box Label (UK), Quartz Music (UK), Usk (UK) and Universal Music Russia, and some broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC World Service, Radio Echo of Moscow and Dutch Radio.
